11am Mass has resumed at Our Lady of Good Counsel!

The Mission of the Catholic Community of South Baltimore is to know, love and serve God and embrace our wider family by living the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy: following the example of Christ, caring for all of God's creations, and protecting the dignity of life.

CCSB offers both daily and weekend masses across the three churches of Holy Cross, St. Mary Star of the Sea, and Our Lady of Good Counsel. These three parishes were combined under one legal state corporation and one canonical Roman Catholic parish in July 2018. Review Archdiocesan & Parish News here.

Thank you Fr. Carrion for your 11+ years of service to the Catholic Community of South Baltimore. Your dedication, hard work and spiritual leadership will be felt in the parish for years to come. Best wishes and many blessings in your new post!

Sacramental Books of the Catholic Community of South Baltimore

This past week the office sent nearly 110 sacramental registers to the archives of the Archdiocese at St. Mary’s Seminary. As you can imagine, our three churches, each over 150 years old, baptizing babies, marrying couples, and burying the dead, as well as keeping track of first communions and confirmations, there were countless sacramental moments. In order to preserve the history, the Archdiocese is digitizing all the records. Most of the books will return, but those whose last entry is over one hundred years old will remain in the Archives. Since the books are not on the premises for several months, in the event you need a baptismal record or any record for proof to receive another sacrament or for a governmental reason, please give the parish about three weeks’ notice. The Archive can retrieve the record but it may take time if that particular book is being digitized and/or out at the bindery for further preservation.

Flooring Project at Good Counsel complete; 11am mass resumes!

Work is 99.9% complete at Our Lady of Good Counsel and the 11am mass is once again being celebrated there! As there are a few minor items still to occur, the Monday 8am mass will continue to be at Holy Cross until the contractors are completely finished. Thank you for your patience during these 3 months waiting for the Church to reopen. We are grateful to those who were able to contribute to this extensive project. It is great testimony to our ancestors of 130 years ago that we continue what they started. The overall cost of the project is $200,000. CCSB has funds in savings and from recent gifts to start the flooring project but could use assistance to complete it.
Please give prayerful consideration to contributing; there are many sponsorship levels still available.

pastorate transition

Father Patrick Carrion was asked by the Archdiocese of Baltimore to take a new position as pastor of Saint Bernadette Parish (Severn, MD), which he accepted.

Father Joshua Laws was asked by the Archdiocese of Baltimore to be the next pastor of the Catholic Community of South Baltimore, which he accepted.

Father Laws’ appointment to CCSB begins July 1, 2019. The Archdiocesan protocol is that a priest is appointed Administrator for up to one year before being named Pastor for the first time. The appointment as Administrator does not connote anything about being temporary or part time or having diminished responsibility or authority. The difference between ‘Pastor’ and ‘Administrator’ is a purely canonical difference only.

Lucas & Conor Hopkins

Lucas & Conor Hopkins Donate to CCSB Poor Box via Green Thumbs Plant Care

Lucas (7) and Conor (5) Hopkins water plants via their Green Thumbs Plant Care business. Green Thumbs charges $2 for every six plants watered. In 2018, Lucas and Conor Hopkins made more than $500. They split their earnings on buying treats and toys; savings as they both started Roth IRAs with the help of their mother; and giving money to the poor box at the Catholic Community of South Baltimore. Thank you, Lucas and Conor!  Read more about their story at southbmore.com.

Liturgical Ministers Needed

As people move away, the roster of liturgical volunteers needs to be expanded, especially with Fr. Laws arriving soon. Even if your schedule does not allow you to be assigned to a liturgical schedule, consider being an on-call or walk-in substitute when you arrive to mass to see if help is needed. Each volunteer must complete online Youth & Child Protection training. We need altar servers, Eucharistic ministers, greeters, van drivers, readers, and ushers!

Archdiocesan Annual Appeal - UPDATE

The Archdiocesan Annual Appeal gives us an opportunity to make a commitment to “lift up the lowly” supporting the needs of the poor, homeless and vulnerable. Our parish goal is $38,414 and, so far, $36,995 has been pledged. We receive a 25% rebate of those funds ($7,077) to use for capital projects. Let us try to meet the goal and in doing so, receive a higher rebate. Please make a pledge if you haven’t already!

Reminder: If you would prefer to give to the parish or make your offertory online, you may do so by scanning a QR code from a card available at the back of the church. Be sure to pick up a card
the next time you are at mass.

western maryland paper mill closure

Luke Paper Mill in Western Maryland

Luke Paper Mill in Western Maryland

Update: Thank you for the generous outpouring to the Alleghany region whose major employer is shutting down. Your contributions totaled just over $2,500, and with other unrestricted money in the Poor Box account, the parish will send $4,000 to the Divine Mercy Parish to distribute to their neighbors.

The CCSB POOR BOX for June 9 & 16 weekends will support those affected by the Western Maryland Paper Mill Closure. The paper mill in the town of Luke (Alleghany County) operated by the Verso company, is closing its doors after 131 years of operation, resulting in the loss of nearly 700 jobs. The immediate and long-term impact of this closing will have significantly adverse consequences on a region that already faces serious economic and social challenges. In response to the urgent and immediate need of families affected by the closing, the Archdiocese has initiated an appeal for financial donations facilitated by Divine Mercy Parish which serves the region. The CCSB Poor Box will be dedicated to this endeavor; donations noted “Mill Closure” can by given by:
